A Sad Good Bye Gives Me A Reason To Experiment!

I had the pleasure of getting to know several exchange students this year from Smithville District Christian Highschool. Three in particular were around a lot at church and visited our Church Youth Group. So last night in light of them leaving we had a little get together at a local restaurant called MT Bellies. This of course gave me an excuse to make a cake. It also gave me an excuse to experiment with modelling gum paste. I had been wanting to try for a while, just didn't know what to make. So below are some pictures of my Canadian Inspired Cake! I will miss you Dorothy, Barne and Ploy! I hope our paths cross again!

The figurines as said are made out of a 50/50 mix of gum paste (purchased not made) and MM Fondant. A chocolate cake and some buttercream icing! Its the perfect mix really! They seemed to enjoy!

School is out!

So I had my last "Cake Class" today. It was a fun 12 weeks, shared with my friends Emily and Lynette! Micheals in St. Catharines offers a fun set of courses to teach you the basics of cake decorating. But I have done them all now and so need to just practice and improve my skills over time! Below is a few pics of my last cake. It looks a little worse then original... it had a few car rides before any pictures were taken! I will miss tuesday mornings with the girls, but look forward to some of the "projects" it will allow me to try!

Hup Holland Hup!

My "adopted" niece DeDe celebrated her birthday at school today. Her birthday is July 16th, however due to being during the summer break, she celebrated a bit early with her classmates. She and her family immigrated from the Netherlands a year ago in August and with FIFA underway are very excited! I made these cupcakes in light of the celebration and excitement! She liked!

A Special Cake for Some Special Boys!

I had the pleasure of double trouble when making this next cake. Two of my nephews are celebrating birthdays this month (Ethan and Linus). Turning 4 and 2. Ethan (4) is into veggie tales. I knew right away this would lead to some fun ideas! Linus had a long list of possible "themes" to incorporate, but I went with bubbles off the list. I thought I could work those two together! I was fun to create this cake. Even better when Ethan told me it was "Beautiful Auntie Kristie". Its comments like that, that make cake decorating so fun! A smile it worth all the hours in the kitchen (and the clean up too!).

The Final Product!

Watching Ethan Enjoy the Cake!
I was not able to get a shot of Linus! However he enjoyed as well!

A "Dummy" Cake

So, I have been learning lots at the cake decorating class I have been taking once a week. One thing I learned was about a "Dummy Cake". Looks real from the outside, but just styrofoam on the inside. We had to cover and decorate one at class the other day. It was fun to be creative with out a cause!

Will this be for me?

So, I am going to give this a try! Blogging that is. I have recently fell in love with baking and then the even better part- decorating it. Being on maternity leave has given me time to work at and develop my passion for this. I have been dabbling around in baking and decorating for a couple years now, but I am defiantly getting a little more serious and consistent! I would love to go back and write the stories of all the past creations I have done, but I feel it might be a bit tedious and turn me off of blogging, so I will just share a few pics here of past work! I do however look forward to sharing whats coming up! The stories and inspiration, fun and not to fun:) experiments. Thats for checking my blog and I hope you enjoy!
