Kids Carnival - Happy Birthday To My Wonderful Children

Well, there are several reasons on why its taken a bit of time to get this blog post up.  One being time, but for the less obvious wanting to put enough pictures in to make it officially worthy of the time and effort put into the event.

What can I say, I am blessed with 2 amazing kids.  Ashton; who turned 1 on August 25th and Addison who celebrated her 3rd birthday on September 22nd.  With wanting to throw Ashton a "Big" first birthday party, I naturally blended the 2 events into one so I could go "All Out".  Picking a gender neutral theme felt tough at first.  Thanks to PINTREST, once we had the Carnival Theme chosen they made my job a lot easier.  From games, prizes,  popcorn machines, signage and so much more the day came together.  I am also lucky to have a amazingly handy husband who can help bring my visions to life.  I was thoroughly happy excited on how the details turned out for the day.

Even more then the details the food and other things.  We are overly blessed with the support and love we received from the Family and Friends who came.  Our kids are both blessed to have so many other awesome children as friends and family in there lives.  They light up on any occasion when they get to "socialize" and build relationships of any size.  This day was no exception.  So a huge thank you to all who made it out, or even those who couldn't for your love and support though many years, especially in these last 3.

Well time to post some pics.  They tell the story better then I anyways! I made a series of collages to hopefully let you have a good idea of the day in a quicken format then the 700 pictures that were taken that day (Oh Dear).  A big thank you to my Sister Lauren who took a ton of pictures to help us remember the day.  A second big thank you to the Talented Samantha Aantjes from Shine 1:21 Photography to capture some of those special moments.  All of your pictures are amazing and these collages are a compilation of them all!

Something A little Personal - Engagement Cupcakes

These cupcake were a lot of fun! Rhonda and Mike are getting hitched and to celebrate there engagement they were throwing a party! (Naturally right?)  Rhonda really wanted to have something that tied into the theme of the party (Engagement & Her and Mike). I think we captured that quite well, while keeping to the colours and feel of the night! Congratulations Rhonda and Mike!

Kids Birthday Cakes - Bubble Guppies

Another Fun Character Cake.  This time on top of a Cupcake Pull Away cake it was the Bubble Guppies. The Fun colourful characters of Gill and Molly.  Happy Birthday Ryan!

Ruffle Cakes

I love when there is a new "trend" in cake styles and we get to put them to use! Two very awesome party planners connected with me for cakes, both requesting the ruffle finish.  I was in my glory to deliver the cake portion for there sweets tables!

The first cake below was for a baby shower to celebrate the arrival of a little boy.  The over all details of the shower were amazing, the sweets table was a real highlight.  I LOVE the banner they put in the cake to give it a nice focal point! Awesome job Robyn.

The second cake was for a sweet girls first birthday.  Sweet was the focus of the event, and the cake table was beautifully designed!  Again, loving the perfectly placed banner on the cake.  It went perfect with the heart accents we placed down the sides of this cake.  The colours were eye catching as well!
Emily, you never cease to amaze me with your eye for design!

Sheep Cupcakes

These cupcakes were as fun to make as they look! Its always a fun expierence to use butter cream for a  neat finish! This layered bubble finish was perfect to create a nice fluffy white sheep!  We built our little mountain of buttercream and topped with a sheep's head.  They were cute, cartoon like sheep.  Jen, a regular of Frosted Spoon treated them for her family for her Dads Birthday.  He is a sheep farmer and so has a particular love for the cuddly things.  Thanks again Jen!

Harley Davidson Cupcakes

My last post was a 'Turtles' Tale for Lucas.  Well Lucas's Dad also had a birthday and to create something fun for that Melissa chose a Harley Davidson theme.  A Logo that has been around for decades!  The Black/White and Orange colours no matter how designed make you think of Harley.  Being that the subject was a cupcake we had limited space to bring the theme to life.  The shape and colours of the cupcake toppers were key!  Very please how they turned out!

A Turtles Tale

Doing this cake was a lot of fun! I always love it when I can use a new technique and this time it was the "marble" effect.  To create an ocean feel for our turtle we blended (but not overly) white and ocean blue.  Once blended to the perfect moment we rolled out and stretched it over our cake.  We did a wrap of sea grass around the edge and then put our cute "Sammy" on top.  He was made completely out of fondant/gum paste.  He was as sweet as he looked!  Over all a great simple design that really brought the theme to life!  Happy Birthday to Lucas! Hoping you enjoyed your cake!

Welcome Baby Danica - Chevron Baby Shower

To anyone who knows the couple and now Dreyer family, they will know how exciting it was to welcome baby "D" (now officially Danica Irene) to the world this spring.  A amazing woman and close friend of mine Jessica Dreyer is a woman who has a LOVE and HEART for detail and all things pretty.  Though I would never feel the ability to meet her decor skills the group of us girls who hosted at least had to give it an effort!  Danicas nursery is a variety of Grey, Yellow and White, Jessica is also known to have a love for Chevron.  Putting those all together made for a great theme to work with.  From invitations, to sweets to decor it all came together so nicely.  It was a pleasure to host with friends such as Tanya, Annie, Angela and Tiff.  Everyones effort paid off.  This blog shows a bit more then just the cake and cookies created by Frosted Spoon but I couldn't resist to share such a special day!  Another huge Congratulations to Mike, Jessica and Danica Dreyer.  You are deeply loved by so many! Especially us here!  Enjoy some pics of the day!

*special Thank you to Carolyn Deblieck for any stationary detail*

Details from Frosted Spoon

Lots of Pretty Decor from the Shower Team!

Everyone Having a Great Time!

Pretty Pink Little Party!

Great clients of mine are always ordering the cutest cupcakes and cakes! They have been the receiver of some of my favourite projects and I thank Jessica Klassen for always thinking of an idea that keeps me on my toes!  These cute pink detailed cupcakes were just the perfect addition to a beautiful anniversary party she was helping to host.  Flavours of chocolate and vanilla cakes were topped with pink perils or the lovely designed toppers.  The variety looked great!  Thanks so much Jessica from FROSTING for the order! Its always a pleasure to create your detailed ideas!

Ships Ahoy! Cruise Themed Cake

I love my job for the very reason that I always get to create something different and unique.  This next cake was so much fun to put together.  Brian was planning the party for his Parents 50th anniversary.   His parents are very lucky to have a son who cares so much about detail! Brian's Parents LOVE to cruise (and travel) and there upcoming cruise is going to be aboard the Princess Cruise Lines.  What better way to celebrate the special occasion with a nautical, cruise ship cake!

Started with a Large 12" double layer vanilla cake.  Covered in white fondant and went to work.  The funnest part was probably creating the actual edible cruise ship that sat on top.  Details of anchors, roping and pools were all a necessity to make this cake feel authentic.  I loved the colour scheme used as well.  Just a very fresh, nautical feel.
Congratulations again on the 50th Wedding Anniversary.  What an example of true love!

Hello Kitty - Shaped Cake

I think I am going to start changing my "line" and now say "I Love Doing Characters".  I have said over and over how much they intimidate me, but when I have something fun like this cake, I must say I ended up Loving It.  I actually rented the "Hello Kitty" pan from Bulk Barn.  This was a first for me. I first felt like I was "Cheating" a bit by doing this.  However, when I had a finished product, I was so glad I did.  I was able to obtain exactly what was requested, and that was crucial!  I was even able to slice the cake down the middle (Horizontally...) to put a layer of buttercream icing in the centre (I was pretty proud of that manueuver).  Once I had the cake baked, iced and a smooth layer of white fondant on top, the rest was fairly simple.  The Red Bow turned out quite well considering I completely freehanded it.  All in all I loved the simplicity of this cake! Congratulations to the birthday Girl who enjoyed it!

Fondant Ruffle Cake - Happy Mothers Day!

Though a lot of readers may not know my mother and I, if you do, you'll know that she loves to "remind" me of things.  Mom - if/when you read this, know I love you to the moon and back and its one of the million things I LOVE about you!
Being in the business of designing cakes for many different occasions, after several years of this, I was "reminded" that I have never designed/made a cake for my mom,  and fair enough- I hadn't.  Even better, my older sister sent me the cutest little file for a printable "MOM" banner and it just inspired me to design something cute for my mom for Mothers Day!

The best part about doing something for family (bless there heart) is you can "experiment"!  I always wanted to try this ruffle effect on a cake, but needed the occasion.  A nice, pink, feminine cake for my Mom was just the design we needed!

So off to work.  Baked a peanut butter chocolate chip cake.  Smothered it in chocolate butter cream icing and then draped in white fondant.  Then let the layers of pink ruffles begin.  When the pink ruffles were all complete, I thought a punch of purple would just give it a nice focal point.  So we gave a wrap around of royal purple ribbon.  Topped with a fancy "MoM" banner and the cake was complete!

I really liked the turn out and can't wait to have the opportunity to make another one!  The ruffles take a bit of time, but for the look: TOTALLY worth it.

Now, bringing it over to my moms, watching them cut it up and eat it in like 5 minutes... THAT was painful! Perhaps one of the reasons I prefer to make a cake, and send it out!  I just imagine that its never destroyed!

Some pics of the cake! Enjoy!

Happy Birthday Emma Bee!

A great client of ours is Jessica Klassen (and family of course).  Jessica loves to throw a great party with out missing out on any details.  We are so honoured she includes us on a regular basis (in fact I will have another blog for her soon...)  Her daughter Emma (Emmabee) was turning 2 and she wanted to celebrate this occasion with lots of great details!  She had this idea for the cutest Bumble Bee cake and matching cupcakes and we couldn't resist getting right to work on these cute little friends!  Congratulations Emma, Jessica and Scott.  What a beautiful Family you have!

Congratulations Andrew! Cross Cake

A friend of mine and her husband were having there son Baptized at there home church.  Andrew, their son is there world and they love him so much.  They wanted to make the day special and celebrate this occasion with a special cake!  Kristin had see a few ideas on line, but liked this simple, elegant style best.  I had to agree and enjoyed this cake very much.  (It also gave me an excuse to purchase a new pan!)  Red velvet cake hid under that soft white fondant!  The cake was enjoyed very much (So I am told!)  Congratulations Andrew, Scott and Kristin!

Happy Birthday Irelyn! - Barbie Cake -

Irelyn is a beautiful girl, with a beautiful imagination and we had the honour of attending her 3rd Birthday Party! Especially special because our Daughters are born in the same year and so its fun watching them all grow up together!  Addison (My daughter) and I got to create the cake.  Ok, so she might of watched her favourite TV Shows will I decorated, but she was there in spirit :) !
Irelyn is into barbies, so only suitable to put one in a cake and give her the biggest princess dress possible!  It was fun to experiment with the petal technique on this cake in a horizontal direction instead of vertical.  I enjoyed it very much.
Happy birthday Irelyn! Thank you for letting us bring this special treat and celebrate with you on your special day!

Congratulations John and Karen

Weddings, Weddings!  I think that because they are usually simple, but bigger they are some of my favourite "gigs" to do.  Planned well in Advance and such a happy time of life there is always so much FUN in the preparation that goes into it!  John and Karens wedding was no exception.  Karen had some great little wedding planners to help her along and make some decisions.  They are also great friends for life!  But the details came together.  Black with silver and "Rose City Kids" Green accents (RCK being a local children's ministry that she participates in).  Loved the choices and was excited to piece together.  Karen has so many favourite flavours that we had to do them all.  From tastes of Lemon, Red Velvet, Chocolate, Coffee and of course Vanilla the palette was sure to be satisfied!
Congratulations John and Karen! Your a beautiful couple inside and out!

Happy Birthday Jack!

Jack was turning one and his mom wanted a cake he would LOVE!  Like many little dudes his age Thomas the Train is one of the FIRST things they just cant get enough of.  So we needed a cake that would be a) practical (Pull away Cupcakes) and b) boasted the Theme of his Favourite Character!

I haven't even made Thomas on such a big scale before, so getting as many little details in as possible was a lot of fun! Enjoy a look at what we came up with! I hope Jack enjoyed and that the day was a great celebration!

Bride To Be

I cant count on all my fingers and toes how often I say "I always love a new challenge".  So it applies this post as well.  I would suspect that as long as I am doing cakes/cupcakes or just alive even, I will have a new challenge ahead.  People: Particularly a Bride on this cake; Not as easy as you think.  I bought a tutorial, spent some time searching the web and then just "Went For It".  I have to admit I have seen MUCH better people done by many amazing sugar artists,  but for my first, I was some what satisfied on how she turned out.  Again, far from perfect, but at least recognizable! She, along with her gifts circled a 3 layer Red Velvet & Cream Cheese Cake.   As always fun was had! I have began to learn the new skill of ppl and will continue to work on it.  Thank you to the Brides Mother in Law for this cool request! I hope it was enjoyed the shower was a hit!

Sock Monkey Cake - All Pretty in Pink!

This cake was such a wonderful one to design!  A special friend of mine Nanny's the cutest little girl Emma and it was for her 2nd birthday.  We did a giant cupcake cake for Emma last year, but with another year gone by, she was a little more specific as to what she wanted.  Emma has a Sock Monkey at home and its name is "Walla, Walla".  So we were asked to create cake to honour "Walla Walla" and just how much Emma Loves Him (or Her?).  It was fun to branch away from the typical sock monkey colours as well (of red and grey) and create something more suiting for the little princess Emma is.  Inside these soft shades of brown, pink and green was a chocolate cake, smothered in chocolate icing! Delicious!  Over all I just loved this cake and how it turned out!  I think it was a hit with the Birthday girl as well!
Happy Birthday Emma!

iPhone Cupcakes - Whats you App?

This was a super fun challenge! Creating 12 unique Apps that best suited the guest of honour.  Hand chosen by his fiance it was a fun and colourful collection.  Placed on top of delicious Peanut Butter Cupcakes these were sure to be a hit!

Thomas the Train!

These were fun yet a simple design: Thomas the Train.  Its so fun to hear what different boys and girls would like to top there cupcakes for there birthdays! Happy Birthday Cameron!

Happy Chinese New Year!

A great friend of mine and hostess extraordinaire was hosting a Chinese New Year party for a group of exchange students that are attending Smithville District Christian School and there host families.  As usual, any chance to to help along with the theme of the party was "All In".  Luckily my parents are also hosting an exchange student (Kiko) and so I was able to call on her help with some Chinese words.  The symbol on the 2 different cupcakes represent "Dragon" (For the Year of the Dragon) and "Friend".  It was a lot of fun to create these and give a go at some Chinese writing.  I was advised it looked OK! After seeing a variety of pictures from the evening, it was evident that fun was had by all! Happy New Year to all our friends here!

BumbleBee

Trystan was turning 6 and knew exactly what he wanted for a birthday cake.  BUMBLEBEE.  Its crazy sometimes to think how a lot of the popular things from when we were children have made a comeback.  Yes, probably a little cooler and more exciting the second time around, but a comeback none the less.  This was a fun yet challenging cake - characters and buttercream.  I will always say "characters make me nervous".. but if I am blogging that means I feel as if they turned out alright.  The other one is buttercream! I am hoping I will increasingly get better to create that smooth finish, but its tough! All in all, it was a fun cake! I love the black on yellow contrast and it was a nice big cake to fully give Bumblebee the size it deserves!  Congratulations again Trystan!

D-D-D-Dora!

This next cake is a theme that comes up more often, but its so great to come up with something different every time!  Again, my daughter is my # 1 critique when it comes to characters she loves and this cake was approved by her!  I didn't have the guts to create Dora, Diego or boots.  Just seen to many "fails" in that department.  We did do a "Glowy" though.  This cake was full of vibrant colours and shapes! It was a lot of fun to bring it to life! I am pretty sure the birthday girl enjoyed as did we!

A Score For Tristan!

Another great theme request for Tristans Birthday!  He was turning 2 and already just loves Hockey.   His mom also has a great taste in flavour! Vanilla and Peanut Butter was the base for these Hockey Themed Cupcakes.  We topped them with some sticks, pucks and a Canadian Maple Leaf as we all know where Hockey is known best!  The colours were great and I even had some fun taking a few pictures outside! It was one of our few moments of snow this year and what better backdrop for these truly Canadian Cupcakes!  Happy Birthday Tristan!

A Wish Come True!

This cake was alot of fun!  Jaxen was having a birthday and his mom said that every night he prayed to have a Dinasour cake.  I could not let him down.  So to the drawing board we went.  A pull apart cake was ordered and it went perfect with this cute dinosaur picture I found.  Everything came together well.  I loved the colours!  Congratulations Jaxen!  I hope it was a great party!

Pink in Sports

This was a first request for me, though I suppose they all are! Its just that some push me to "think" a little harder then others on how I am going to incorporate a theme on to a cupcake.  For these Red velvet and Chocolate cupcakes we wanted to do a Sporty Theme, while keeping it girly. So I put together some basketballs, baseballs, wands and crowns! The pink sprinkles were the perfect accent! It was really quite fun to put a pink spin on a sporty theme!  I believe the Birthday Girl Enjoyed!

Angelina Ballerina

A cake fit for a ballerina for a special Birthday girl named Grace! A daughter of great friends of mine was having her birthday party.  Since I have known Grace, she has loved Angelina.  In fact, probably a contributing factor to my own daughter loving Angelina.  This cake was a lot of fun.  It was a vanilla cake (colour pink, but no pictures sorry) and then iced with Pink Vanilla Cream Icing.  I used the petal effect for applying.  It gave a frilly feel! And of course topped with the elegant Angelina herself!
Happy Birthday Grace! We love you so much!

In The Night Garden

Wow, I cant believe it took me so long to get pictures of this cake up.  Well - Yes I can.  I have a lot of "Back Blogging" to do.  Needless to say, this was another fun cake to do! I have said it before and Ill say it again.  Characters always make me a bit nervous.  I never know if I will capture the charachter well or just make a poor child cry!
But off I set to create 2 very cute characters.  I was told I did well, I dont watch "In The Night Garden" (well my daughter doesnt at least) so off to Google we went to get "in the know" on these charachters.  Iggle Piggle and Upsy Daisy: They were my challenge.  It ended up being a lot of fun! This cake was done on a carrot cake with cream cheese icing.  Enjoy the pictures! Happy Birthday Amelia!

First Attempt @ A Pintrest Like Baby Shower!

I would assume by now most people have heard of "Pintrest".  If not a personal user, someone at your recent family Christmas Party or at the Office must be talking about it.  I have to admit, being married for almost 8 years and having my first daughter a little over 2 years ago, (as well as majority of my siblings already having children) all the "Major" highlights in my life in which I would get the opportunity to host my "own" big parties are past.  Luckily I still have a sister (down the road) and a sister in law or two that are having babies and so spending time on Pintrest.. (and then heading over to ETSY to purchase supplies) is still something I get the enjoyment of doing.  Its probably a good thing I am not currently planning my wedding or daughters 1st birthday party again.  The amount of DYI's and ideas that Pintrest can give you is limitless.
All this to say, a week or so ago I had the honour of co-hosting my sister-in-laws baby shower at my home.  I didnt want to blow the bank hosting with all the details, but I did want to have a fun "gender neutral" baby shower to celebrate the upcoming arrival of this little peanut.  Becki (my sister-in-law) and I have always gotten along well and shared our attention to detail and "stylish" things, so I really wanted to make this shower special.

So to Pintrest & Etsy I went.  A fun "celebrate" banner was created in the perfect colours.  The design downloaded from "Tom Kat Studios" and then the colours modified by my sister Carolyn.  In fact all te desgn work was buy her.  Tags for the mason jar glasses, prize tags, the banner(s), food place cards and anything else I am missing.  It was so fun to add that personalized element!

Oh right, this is a cake/cupcake blog! We had those too!  I did do a variety of cupcakes for the centre of the table. (pics below)  There were also some beautiful cookies done by my sister - in - law Racheal Willms (you can see them in the pics).  She is also very talented in the sweets department!  And to add to the awesomeness of the shower, my OTHER Willms sis-in-law Michelle, had special bread ordered from the local bakery for the sandwiches she had made.

I really did enjoy and love the shower!  Below are some pics to share a "look" of what went on.  Next on my "to-do" list is take a photography course.  We own a great camera, but I havent mastered the use of it yet.  So the pics are as good as is gets!
Thanks for following readers and enjoy the pics.

A picture of the straws I purchsed off Etsy.  They wee to go in the cups.
They didnt arrive on time :(  So I eill save them for next time!

Happy Birthday Avery - Horse Cake

December was a busy month at Frosted Spoon, hence its mid January and I am still catching up on blogging.  Another great cake I was able to create, was for young girl named Avery.  She has a love for horses and so we wanted to make a special cake to display just that! The cake also had to be chocolate! Chocolate cake, with Chocolate Icing.. Mmmm.  Below are some pics of Averys Cake! I hope she enjoyed as much as I did creating.  The horse was freehanded with a sharp knife and then embellished with some doubled up fondant layers, added the flowers and hot pink lettering to give it that girly feel!  Happy Birthday Avery!

MICKEY MOUSE!

I dont think there is a family out there that hasnt heard of "The Mouse".  So its super cute when young kids (a little girl in this case) get excited about the classic characters who are the face of Disney: "Mickey & Minnie Mouse".  A special little girl was turning 2 and wanted to have the famous duo at her party too!  So we created some fun fondant cupcake toppers to make the chocolate & vanilla cupcakes memorable!  Happy Birthday!

Sweet 16 - High Fashion

A co-worker of mine had a daughter turning 16.  To celebrate she wanted something to reflect her stylish and fun personality.  So we started with a rich red velvet cake with smooth cream cheese butter cream filling and inner icing.  We then covered it with vanilla fondant and sided it with zebra stripes.  This bright and vibrant cake would not be complete with a hot pink heel! It turned out great!
Happy Birthday Natasha!
